Customised systems for VOC reduction
Safely treating complex mixtures of organic pollutants
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as solvents, chlorinated or fluorinated hydrocarbons and mineral oil derivatives, are produced in exhaust gas streams from many production facilities and technical processes — in the paint and solvent-processing industries, in the chemical and petrochemical industries, in the timber and paper industries, and during the remediation of contaminated sites using soil vapour extraction. The 31st Federal Immission Control Ordinance (BImSchV) requires facilities subject to emission controls to comply on a permanent basis with limit values of 20, 50 or 100 mg C/m³ in the treated exhaust air stream, depending on the specifications and relevance.
Commonly occurring organic pollutants: organic solvents (MEK, MIBK, isopropanols, hexanes, BTEX, chlorinated hydrocarbons), mineral oil derivatives (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenols, tar products (pyridines), nitrated hydrocarbons, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
Process
Evoran takes a flexible approach to this diversity: depending on the pollutant profile and flow rate, we combine adsorption using activated carbon or zeolite, gas scrubbing, UV photo-oxidation and catalytic oxidation (KatOx) to create a bespoke treatment process. For large flow rates with low pollutant concentrations, we also use concentration via adsorption wheels: this concentrates the pollutant load into a significantly smaller secondary circuit, which can be operated economically and, in some cases, autothermally. Where concentration or composition requires it, thermal-catalytic reactors operating at 500 to 1000 °C are employed.
The concentration and oxidation process employed by Evoran offers a low-maintenance and cost-effective alternative to conventional exhaust air treatment methods.
